Winona Defense Spells Trouble for Pack

The Packer boys had trouble in River City last Friday, as they fell 49-41 to Winona.

The Winhawks’ defense was difficult for the Packers to penetrate, as they managed just 13 points in the first half and were down by 21 at one point in the second. A late surge brought them to within six with two minutes to go, Austin could get no closer.

Zach Fadness led the Pack with 12 points, while Tom Aase had 10, Joe Aase 7, Jay Ettinger 6, Zach Wessels 4 and Andrew Kaiser 2.

Packers Sweep the Week

The Austin Packers boys basketball team scored exactly twice as many points on Tuesday as they did on Friday, but still came away with convincing wins against Faribault and Rochester Century.

With the 78-55 win over Faribault and the 39-26 defeat of Century, the Packers have won five of their last six and are now over the .500 mark for the first time this year, at 8-7. They’re 7-3 in Big Nine Conference action.

In the Faribault contest on Tuesday, the Packers’ first 24 points came from three-pointers. Matt Duren had a huge night with 23 points, while Zach Wessels had 11, Tom Aase 10, Andrew Kaiser 9, Zach Fadness 9, Joe Aase 8, Jay Ettinger 3, Max Coffey 3 and Caleb Knorr 2.

The Century game was completely different and much more physical. The Packers trailed early before going on a 23-2 run to close the half, and led 25-10 at halftime.

Zach Fadness led the Packers with 13 points, while Andrew Kaiser had 8, Joe Aase 7, Zach Wessels 6, Jay Ettinger 4 and Matt Duren 1.

Rally falls short against Owatonna

The Austin boys fell behind early against visiting Owatonna on Friday night and made a couple of runs to get within two points, but the Owatonna runs were a little bigger and lasted longer, leading to a 53-41 win.

Joe Aase had 14 points for the Packers, Zach Wessels 12, Matt Duren 10, Jay Ettinger 3 and Tom Aase 2.

Packers Trounce Albert Lea

The Packers started slow on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at Albert Lea. With 8 minutes left in the first half, they trailed the Tigers 8-3.

Then they went on a 25-0 run and put the game away by halftime. Smothering defense and solid outside shooting were keys to the 66-41 victory.

Tom Aase led the Packers with 12 points, while Zach Wessels had 11, Jay Ettinger 10, Andrew Kaiser 9, Joe Aase, 9, Zach Fadness 6, Colin Weisert 3, Matt Duren 2, Nate Schwab 2 and Caleb Knorr 2.

Alumni Road Trip

Several Fast Break Club member are on a road trip today to watch Packer Alum Connor Gunderson and his St. Olaf teammates take on Carleton.

The Oles are down 49-26 at halftime. We’re rooting for a comeback.

Update: The Oles made it a good game, holding Carleton to 23 points in the second half. They were within three in the final seconds, and had one last chance to send it to overtime. The shot, and the rally, fell short as the Knights won the game 72-69.
