The Packer boys claimed their second straight Big Nine crown Tuesday night with a 61-53 win over a scrappy Winona team in Packer gym.
The Winhawks were fresh from a 81-61 upset Friday over second-place Rochester John Marshall and had won six of their last seven. They got off to an early 8-3 lead, but the Packers came back to take a 29-22 halftime lead. The game remained close through the second half, with Winona pulling within a point on three occasions, but the Packers always had an answer and finally put the game away.
Joe Aase led the Packers in scoring with 25 points, while Zach Wessels had 17 (leaving him at 999 for his career), Tom Aase had 6, Collin Weisert and Bret Lukes 5 each, Ajuda Nywesh 2 and Gach Gach 1.
The Packers are now 23-0 on the year, and the win was their 24th straight at home. Their last home loss was March 4, 2010 to Rochester Century.
