The Sixth Man

9 Mar

The fan support for the Austin Packers has been huge this year, with the biggest and loudest crowd yet for Austin’s Big Nine-clinching win over Owatonna a week ago today. When the final buzzer sounded, the students stormed the court (you might want to expand to full screen on this one):

The home crowd for Wednesday night’s opening-round win over Faribault was great too, with the gym almost full despite the light turnout of Falcon fans.

Tomorrow night at 7 p.m. the Packers continue their tournament march with their last home game of the season as they host the #5 seed, Winona, with a trip to the Section 1AAA finals on the line.

See the preview articles in the Austin Daily Herald and Winona Daily News.

The Packers are 12-0 at home for the year, and will be looking to stay perfect. The Winhawks will be bringing a crowd, so it’s important for the Sixth Man to show up early and loud.

Join the Packer Fast Break Club on Facebook and invite others to attend the game, too!

Big Nine Champs!

3 Mar

The Austin Packers boys basketball team came into Friday night’s game against Owatonna with two scenarios:

  • If they won, they would claim sole possession of the Big Nine title, or
  • If they lost, they would likely share the title with both Owatonna and Mankato East.

With their 61-52 win over the Huskies, the Packers clinched the conference crown outright for the first time since 1988 (they had shared with Rochester Mayo in 1999), and with Mankato East’s win over Rochester Century the Huskies fell to third. Here are the final standings:

Tom Aase led the Packers in scoring with 18 points, while Joe Aase added 15, Zach Wessels 12, Goliath Oboyo 8, Collin Weisert 5, Nate Schwab 2 and Bret Lukes 1. See the stories in the Austin Daily Herald, Austin Post-Bulletin and Owatonna People’s Press.

Here are the game highlights:

The Packers open section 1AAA play-offs Wednesday at home, likely against Faribault. Game time is 7 p.m.

Packers run record to 19-5

26 Feb

In a quick turnaround game after their Big Nine-clinching win over Rochester John Marshal Friday, the Packers traveled to Caledonia Saturday for a non-conference game against the Warriors. The Packers led most of the game (although they trailed 26-23 at halftime), but it was close all the way. The final score was 55-50, as the Packers ran their winning streak to six in anticipation of their regular-season finale against Owatonna.

Goliath Oboyo had a career-high 16 points to pace the Packers, while Tom Aase had 14, Zach Wessels 11, Nate Schwab 6 and Joe Aase 6 and  Zach Vierkandt 2.

Packers tied for Big 9 Lead

18 Feb

The Packers raced to an early lead Friday night and led all the way in a 69-56 win over Rochester Century Friday night at home.

Joe Aase led the Pack with 21 points, while  Zach Wessels had 20, Tom Aase 15,  Nate Schwab 6, Bret Lukes 3 and  Goliath Oboyo and Collin Weisert 2 each. See the recaps in the Austin Daily Herald and Austin Post-Bulletin.

Here are the game highlights:

The win, combined with an Owatonna loss to Mankato East, means the Packers are now tied with Owatonna for first place in the Big 9 Conference with three games remaining. If the Packers and Huskies win their next two conference games, the title will be decided in a winner-take-all regular season finale Mar. 2 in Austin.

Packers lap Faribault

15 Feb

The offense wasn’t as impressive as in their earlier 74-19 win over Faribault, but the Packer boys managed to double the Falcons’ score Tuesday night in a 58-29 road win.
