Packers Top Trojans 86-58 to Stay Unbeaten

The Austin boys basketball team hosted New Prague Friday night, and after falling behind 19-11 early due to some hot three-point shooting by the Trojans’ Luke Rynda, stormed back to take a nine-point halftime lead en route to an 86-58 rout.

Senior reserve guard Tommy Olmsted came up with a career high 13 points, including 10 in the first half, to help spark the Packers’ comeback. Joe Aase led the team with 24 points, while Zach Wessels had 21 and Bret Lukes 18. Tom Aase and Ajuda Nywesh rounded out the scoring with 6 and 4 points, respectively.

Here are the highlights of the Packers’ win, which was 16th in a row at home, and which kept their season record perfect at 7-0.

The Packers go on the road tonight to face Eastview (in Apple Valley) from Section 3AAAA in a 7 p.m. start.

 

Packers get Key Section Win

The Austin Packers stayed undefeated at 6-0 and earned a key win for Section 1AAA seedings Friday night in Red Wing as they topped the Wingers, currently rnnked #16 in the state, 64-52.

The second-ranked Packers were led in scoring by Bret Lukes with a career-high 19, while Zach Wessels added 17 and Tom Aase 13. Joe Aase and Ajuda Nywesh both chipped in 7, and Tommy Olmsted had 1.

Next up for the Packers is New Prague in only their second home game of the season. The Trojans come to Austin on Friday, Dec. 28 for another game that will figure in section seedings, as New Prague is 5-2 on the season and will be looking for revenge for last year’s section final.

Packers Surge to 3-0 in Big Nine

After a sluggish first half Tuesday night at Mankato East, the Packers turned up the intensity and raced to a 72-36 win that moved their record to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big Nine.

Ahead just 30-20 at halftime, the Packers outscored the Cougars 42-16 in the second half. Zach Wessels, Joe Aase and Bret Lukes were in double figures with 22, 16 and 10 points, respectively. Tom Aase added 8, Ajuda Nywesh 7, Collin Weisert 5 and Tommy Olmsted and Gach Gach 2 each. The Packers caused 28 East turnovers and went 10/11 on free throws (a massive improvement over the 14/30 performance in the 2OT game at Albert Lea.

Next up are two key Section 1AAA rivals. The Packers continue their Road Warrior status on Friday when they travel to Red Wing to face the 4-2 Wingers. The next home game is Friday, Dec. 28 against section rival New Prague, currently 5-2 on the year.

Of their first six games, only last Friday’s Mayo game was in the friendly confines of Packer Gym.

Packers lap Rochester Mayo

The Packers opened their home season Friday night with a 68-34 win over Rochester Mayo, the Packers’ 15th straight home win dating back to March 4, 2011.

Austin was in control the whole way, but put on a big spurt in the second half to stretch the final margin. Joe Aase led the Packers with 23 points, while Tom Aase had 12, Ajuda Nywesh 10, Bret Lukes and Zach Wessels 9 each, Tommy Olmsted 3 and Jacob Kempen 2.

Pancakes with the Packers Tomorrow!

The Austin Packer Fast Break Club is hosting a Pancakes with the Packers fundraiser on Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Austin Eagles Club, from 8-10:30 a.m.

Tickets are just $6 each, with proceeds supporting the Austin boys basketball program. Kids 12 and under get free admission when accompanied by a paid adult.

AM 1480 KAUS Sports Director Dan Bettlach will be broadcasting live from 9-10.

Bring your future Packers out to meet and have their pictures taken with all of their favorite Packers: the kind who wear Red and White (not Green and Gold)!
