Packers Surge to 3-0 in Big Nine

After a sluggish first half Tuesday night at Mankato East, the Packers turned up the intensity and raced to a 72-36 win that moved their record to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big Nine.

Ahead just 30-20 at halftime, the Packers outscored the Cougars 42-16 in the second half. Zach Wessels, Joe Aase and Bret Lukes were in double figures with 22, 16 and 10 points, respectively. Tom Aase added 8, Ajuda Nywesh 7, Collin Weisert 5 and Tommy Olmsted and Gach Gach 2 each. The Packers caused 28 East turnovers and went 10/11 on free throws (a massive improvement over the 14/30 performance in the 2OT game at Albert Lea.

Next up are two key Section 1AAA rivals. The Packers continue their Road Warrior status on Friday when they travel to Red Wing to face the 4-2 Wingers. The next home game is Friday, Dec. 28 against section rival New Prague, currently 5-2 on the year.

Of their first six games, only last Friday’s Mayo game was in the friendly confines of Packer Gym.
