Packer Seniors Profiled in Austin Daily Herald

14 Mar

Today’s Austin Daily Herald has a great profile on the Packer seniors – Ryan Larson, Goliath Oboyo, Nate Schwab, Zach Vierkandt – and the road they’ve taken to playing in the Section 1AAA championship game on Friday.

Here’s a sampler:

While they’ve clicked throughout the season for the No. 5 ranked Packers (22-5 overall), who are playing for Austin’s first state tournament berth in 30 years against New Prague this Friday, some of them weren’t even on the basketball radar in Austin a few years ago.

The biggest thing to know is that Goliath Oboyo, Nate Schwab, Zach Vierkandt and Ryan Larson combined for about five minutes of varsity playing time before this season and now they’re all playing key roles on Austin’s best team in 30 years.

Be sure to get to Rochester Friday night for the championship game against New Prague. If you need a ride, we have bus transportation available.

The Sixth Man

9 Mar

The fan support for the Austin Packers has been huge this year, with the biggest and loudest crowd yet for Austin’s Big Nine-clinching win over Owatonna a week ago today. When the final buzzer sounded, the students stormed the court (you might want to expand to full screen on this one):

The home crowd for Wednesday night’s opening-round win over Faribault was great too, with the gym almost full despite the light turnout of Falcon fans.

Tomorrow night at 7 p.m. the Packers continue their tournament march with their last home game of the season as they host the #5 seed, Winona, with a trip to the Section 1AAA finals on the line.

See the preview articles in the Austin Daily Herald and Winona Daily News.

The Packers are 12-0 at home for the year, and will be looking to stay perfect. The Winhawks will be bringing a crowd, so it’s important for the Sixth Man to show up early and loud.

Join the Packer Fast Break Club on Facebook and invite others to attend the game, too!

Packers Dominate All-Conference Team

7 Mar

The Austin Packers, who clinched their first Big Nine conference title in 13 years last week, are well represented on the all-conference team announced today.

Juniors Joe Aase and Tom Aase, and sophomore Zach Wessels, were named to the all-conference first team.

Coach Kris Fadness was recognized as Coach of the Year.

The Packers begin section playoffs at home tonight against Faribault. See the Austin Post-Bulletin and Austin Daily Herald for previews, as well as this Rochester Post-Bulletin preview of the whole section.

Joe Aase & Tom Aase are KAAL Preps of the Week

9 Feb

KAAL TV named Joe Aase and Tom Aase its “Preps of the Week” last night for their performance in last Friday’s 78-47 win over Rochester Mayo. Here’s an excerpt of the transcript:

“There’s a definite chemistry between them where they know each other so well and they just feed off each other,” said head coach Kris Fadness.

Both of the Aase cousins are making a big difference in Austin’s line-up.

At six-eight, Joe is the tallest guy in a Packers jersey and the team’s leading scorer.

“Joe’s a shooter. He can flat out score the ball, whether it’s inside or outside,” said Fadness.

“He’s probably one of the best shooters in the conference, if not the state,” said Tom.

Tom is a little shorter than his cousin Joe, but don’t let that fool you! He’s a defensive machine.

“Tom’s our leading rebounder. He’s probably our best overall defensive player. He leads us in blocked shots, he’s very athletic,” said Fadness.

“He’s a really good shot blocker, definitely really good rebounder with his long arms,” said Joe.

The Packers return to action tonight at home against Mankato West.

First in Conference, Seventh in State

9 Jan

Thanks to Mayo’s double overtime loss to Owatonna Saturday and Century’s Friday night loss to Winona, the Austin Packers are now in a six-way tie for first place in the Big Nine Conference:

The next two weeks will be a key stretch, as all of the conference co-leaders will have at least two games against other co-leaders.

In the statewide polls, the Packers have climbed to a #7 ranking, as reported in Breakdown Sports:

The Packers host Faribault tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m., while Mankato East travels to Mayo, Owatonna hosts Winona, Mankato West visits Albert Lea and Century goes to John Marshall.
