Almost had ’em

The Packer boys nearly pulled off the upset Saturday night in the Section 1AAA semifinals, leading 32-24 at one point in the second half against Winona, ranked third in the state. The Winhawks rallied for a 45-40 win and will now face New Prague in the finals.

Packers Advance to Section Semis

The Austin Packer boys pulled out a close game against visting Faribault Wednesday night in the Minnesota Section 1AAA high school basketball tournament. Trailing by five with about five minutes to go, the Packers rallied to pull out a seven-point win.

Joe Aase scored 17 points,  while Tom Aase added 12, Zach Wessels 11, Jay Ettinger and Zach Fadness 6 and Collin Weisert 3. Here is the Herald story.

Next up for the Packers is top-seeded Winona on Saturday night.

Packer drop close regular-season finale

Last Friday at Packer Gym the Austin boys lost a close contest to Rochester Century before a raucous crowd.

The Packers fell behind by double-digits before rallying to tie in the final minute, eventually losing on an Ater Manyang put-back of a teammate’s airball with seven seconds remaining.

Joe Aase had 21 points for the Packers, while Andrew Kaiser scored 14, Zach Wessels 13, Tom Aase 5 and Jay Ettinger 2.

Packers Bounce Back vs. Tigers

After a tough game Tuesday night, the Packers had strong effort Friday against Albert Lea and guaranteed themselves a winning record for the season with a 62-41 win at home on Senior Night. The seniors were introduced before the game:

Tom Aase pace the Packer attack with 19 points, while Joe Aase added 15, Zach Wessels 8, Jay Ettinger 5, Quinn Yocom 4, Zach Fadness and Nate Weisert 3 and Caleb Knorr 2.

The Packers close the regular season Friday night at home against Century, and can claim third place in the Big 9 with a win.

Packers Start Fast, Hit Wall against Owatonna

After grabbing an early lead, the Packers ran into turnover problems and lost by a lopsided score at Owatonna on Tuesday.

Joe Aase had 16 points, Zach Wessels 11, Tom Aase 6, Zach Fadness 3 and Colin Weisert 3 for the Packers, while the Huskies used points off turnovers and hot three-point shooting to put up 71 points.
