Packers Open Fall League with Big Wins

21 Oct

Contributions to the Packer Fast Break Club make it possible for the Austin boys basketball team to participate in Summer team camps and tournaments and the Breakdown Sports Fall League. The Fall League games are held at Kennedy High School in Bloomington, where the boys get to play against top competition from the Twin Cities metro area.

The Breakdown league started Saturday, Oct. 20 with two games against teams ranked in the top 10 in the Class AAA preseason polls. The Packers built a 52-17 lead against Academy of Holy Angels before coasting to a 54-30 win. Holy Angels was missing at least one key player, but in the second game the third-ranked Packers faced a loaded team from St. Paul Johnson, which is ranked second. The Packers got off to an early lead, but the Governors battled back to tie the game at halftime. Tom Aase was fouled behind the arc with four minutes to play, and he made all three free throws to give the Packers the lead for good as they went on to a 43-34 win. Here are the highlights:

After the top-seeded Packers had scrapped back from six points down to second-seeded New Prague in the second half to take a one-point lead with 90 seconds remaining, the game came down to a last play.  With the score tied at 41, Austin’s coach Kris Fadness called timeout with 13 seconds left.
