Support for the Austin Packer Boys Basketball team this year has been fantastic. The spirit, noise, and chaos in the stands has been led by the student section, the “6th Man”. Here are a couple of examples of the enthusiasm and Packer Pride that exists in Packer gym.
The Austin Packers are heading back to the State Tournament for the third straight year! They defeated Red Wing 55-34 in the section finals, Friday night at the Mayo Civic Center. Austin led 24-19 after Red Wing closed the first half on a 9-0 run. The Pack opened the 2nd half with a 10-0 run of their own and cruised to the victory. The Packers defense was relentless throughout the entire game, holding the Wingers to a season low 34 points.
The 2013-14 Austin Packers played their final home game of the season to a capacity crowd Saturday night. The fans were not disappointed as the Packers stretched their winning streak to 15 games defeating New Prague 79-64. The Pack fell behind early 17-11, tied it at 21 and held a lead for the rest of the game. The win sets up a rematch of last years section AAA final between Austin and Red Wing which will be played at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, 8:00pm Friday.
The #4 state ranked Packers defeated Faribault for the second time in six days to advance to the section semifinals. Austin’s defense caused numerous turnovers resulting in offensive points as the Pack led by 25 at half. The Packers went on to win 73-42.
The 23-3 Packers completed their regular season schedule Saturday night with a 69-42 win over Faribault. For the second consecutive year Austin has finished Big 9 play undefeated going 18-0 and have won 44 straight spanning three years over Big 9 opponents. The Pack jumped out to a 22-0 lead and never looked back with 12 players scoring in the contest and the entire roster seeing action.
A big thanks goes out to all who participated in the “Hoops for Hope” event to raise funds for a cure for cancer. It was a great success.
Austin received the #1 seed in the section and will play host to the #8 seed Faribault 7:00 pm, Wednesday night, in the first round of section 1 AAA playoffs. To see how the other sections in Class AAA were seeded go to mn scores.
