Packers Keep Streaks Alive with 56-45 Win

The Austin Packers kept their season record unblemished at 9-0 and ran their home winning streak to 17 games with a 56-45 win over Mankato West Friday night.

After falling behind 4-0 in the opening minutes, the Packers came back strong to build a 29-10 lead with 2:08 left in the first half. West then went on an 8-0 run to close the gap to 29-18 at halftime. The Packers built a 20-point lead early in the second half, and their lead was in the teens most of the rest of the way, although West did cut the margin to 9 in the closing minutes before the Packers put the game away at the free-throw line.

Zach Wessels led the scoring with 20 points, while Tom Aase had 17 points, 9 rebounds and 8 blocks and Joe Aase contributed 9 points and 9 rebounds.  Bret Lukes and Collin Weisert rounded out the scoring with 7 and 3 points respectively.

The Packers return to action this afternoon in Waseca in a game that has been moved to a 4 p.m. start.

Packers Survive in 2OT at Albert Lea

The Packers traveled to Albert Lea Tuesday night to open Big Nine play against the Tigers. Full highlights of the double overtime win will be coming tomorrow, but for now here’s the big finish.

After a late three by Albert Lea gave the Tigers a 71-70 lead with 10.5 seconds in the second overtime, Packers coach Kris Fadness called timeout to set up a final play. Here’s the result:

Zach Wessels, who hit the game-winner, led the Packers with 27 points, while Joe Aase added 21, Ajuda Nywesh 9, Bret Lukes 6, Tom Aase 5, Tommy Olmsted 5 and Collin Weisert 1.

The Packers, now 3-0 on the season, open their home season Friday night hosting Rochester Mayo.

Packers top Edina in Tip-Off Classic

The Austin Packers traveled to Minnetonka Saturday to participate in the Breakdown Sports Tip-Off Classic, a day-long basketball feast featuring most of the top teams in the state, and came away with a 66-62 win over Edina.

The Packers, ranked #2 in Minnesota’s Class AAA, got off to a quick start against the Hornets, who began the season ranked #2 in Class AAAA, but are currently #7. Austin led 14-4 before Edina was forced to call time out. The Packers never trailed, although the Hornets did make two runs to tie the score.

Joe Aase paced the Packers with 27 points, while Zach Wessels added 15, Collin Weisert 10, Tom Aase 7, Ajuda Nywesh 4 and Bet Lukes 3. Here are the highlights:

The Packers, 2-0,  visit Albert Lea Tuesday night to take on the 1-1 Tigers before hosting Rochester Mayo on Friday night in their home opener.
