Packers 20-0 after Albert Lea Win

The Austin Packers ran their season record to 20-0 Saturday night with an 80-53 win over Albert Lea.

It was Senior Night, and the team’s seniors were introduced as starters (along with their parents):

As in the first game with Albert Lea, the Packers got off to a slow start and only led by 28-27 at halftime. The Packers got their offense going in the second half, scoring 52 points on the way to the 80-52 win.

Joe Aase and Zach Wessels scored 19 points each, while Bret Lukes had 15, Ajuda Nywesh 14 and Tom Aase 9. Collin Weisert and Curtis Oberbroeckling each added 2 points.

The win was Packers’ 22nd straight at home, and they return to action Tuesday night at home against Faribault.

Packers beat Mankato West by 42

Tom Aase scored a career high 25 points and Joe Aase added 22 at the Austin boys ran their record to 19-0 on the year with an 83-41 win at Mankato West Friday night.

Zach Wessels also was in double figures with 12 points, while Ajuda Nywesh and Gach Gach had 5 each, Bret Lukes 4, Collin Weisert and Nik Gasner 3 apiece and  Curtis Oberbroeckling and Zach Coffey both added 2.

The Packers return to action tonight at home against Albert Lea. It is Senior Night, with a brief ceremony honoring the senior team members before the game.

Packers 18-0 after Mayo Win

The Austin Packers went to Rochester to face the Mayo Spartans Friday night and came away with a 64-39 win in Big Nine Conference play.

The Packers, hindered by injuries to starting guards Zach Wessels and Bret Lukes, led just 25-19 at halftime, but went on a 39-12 run to put the game away. Joe Aase had 24 of his game-high 34 points in the second half. Lukes added 13, Ajuda Nywesh 7, Tom Aase 6 and Collin Weisert and Wessels 2 each.

The Packers, ranked #2 in Minnesota’s Class AAA, now own the longest active winning streak in the state. They return to action next Friday night at Mankato West.

Packers trounce Owatonna

Austin defeated Owatonna Friday night in Big Nine conference action, posting a 67-46 win in Packer Gym.

The Packers used smothering defense and hot shooting to build a 29-12 halftime lead and stretched it to 50-17 early in the second half. They had four players in double figures: Zach Wessels with 17, Joe Aase 16, Ajuda Nywesh 11 and Collin Weisert with 10. Tom Aase had 6, Gach Gach 5 and Bret Lukes 2 to round out the scoring.

The Packers now have nearly a week off as they return to action next Friday in Rochester where they face Mayo High School in a 7;30 p.m. start.

Packers top Mankato East 75-53

Despite a sluggish second half, the Packers defeated Mankato East 75-53 Tuesday night to move to 9-0 in conference play and 16-0 overall on the season. The Packers led 48-26 at halftime but their offense stagnated in the second half as they managed just 27 points.

The Packers had four players in double figures led by Tom Aase and Zach Wessels with 16 each, while Joe Aase added 14 and Ajuda Nywesh 10. Collin Weisert scored 6, Gach Gach 5, Tommy Olmsted and Bret Lukes 3 each and Curtis Oberbroeckling had 2.

The win was the Packers’ 20th straight at home, dating to March 2011. Here are the highlights:

Next up for the Packers will be Owatonna, currently third in the conference with a 5-2 record.
