Only in Albert Lea: The "Zamboni" for sweeping

Albert Lea took at 2-0 lead Tuesday night, but then Austin went on a 23-0 run and never looked back as they cruised to a 79-39 win.

Joe Aase led the Packers in scoring with 25 points, while Zach Wessels had 16, Tom Aase 8, Tommy Olmsted 7, Goliath Oboyo, Nate Schwab and Zach Vierkandt 5, Bret Lukes and Collin Weisert 3 and Ryan Larson 2.

The Packers will be looking to avenge an early season loss at Rochester Mayo when they host the Spartans on Friday night. Then they travel to Minneapolis Washburn Saturday for a matchup with the Millers, who are also ranked in the top 10 in Class AAA. The Packers are currently #8 while Washburn is #3.

Packers win in OT at Mankato East

The Austin boys completed the season sweep of Mankato East Tuesday night with a 70-58 overtime win over Mankato East.The Packers got off to a slow start, trailing 12-5 early, but came back to grab a 22-21 lead at halftime. They built a 50-42 lead with five minutes to go, but a desperation three-pointer from half court sent the contest into overtime.

Joe Aase led the Packers in scoring with 24 points, while  Zach Wessels had 17, Goliath Oboyo 11, Tom Aase and Nate Schwab 6 each, Zach Vierkandt 4 and Bret Lukes 2.

The road win boosts the Packers to 11-3 overall and 8-1 in the Big Nine and into sole possession (for now) of first place, a half game ahead of Owatonna, which lost in non-conference action Tuesday night at metro power Eden Prairie, which was ranked 7th in Class AAAA, in double overtime.

In the only other game involving a Big Nine team last night, Mankato West pulled out a one-point win over Fairmont.

The Packers travel to Owatonna Friday night to face the 12-3 Huskies for the first time and with the conference lead on the line.

Packers Get 10th Win

The Austin boys raced to a 40-19 halftime lead Friday night against Rochester John Marshall and cruised to a 79-59 Big Nine victory.

The win keeps the Packers in a first place tie with Owatonna at 7-1, and was their 10th win overall.

Zach Wessels had 20 points, Tom Aase 19, Joe Aase 15, Goliath Oboyo 10, Zach Vierkandt 7, Bret Lukes 4 and Nathan Schwab and Collin Weisert 2 each.

Next week will be crucial for the Packers as they travel to Mankato for a rematch with East and to Owatonna for their first meeting with the Huskies. Austin beat East 82-72 in December, and the Cougars’ only other loss is to Owatonna.

 

Packers Stay Perfect at Home

The Austin boys raced to a 48-26 halftime lead Tuesday and cruised to a 77-55 win over Winona to run their home record to 6-0.

Joe Aase led the Packers with 26 points (20 in the first half), while Zach Wessels added 14, Tom Aase scored 11, Bret Lukes 8, Collin Weisert 7, Nathan Schwab 5, Goliath Oboyo 4 and Zach Vierkandt 2.

Packers Split Weekend Games

The Austin boys got a big win Friday night on the road against Big Nine rival Rochester Century, as they started quickly and never looked back. The Packers and Panthers went into the game tied for first in the conference (along with Owatonna), and the Packers came out with the victory.

Joe Aase led the Packers with 18 points, while Tom Aase had 15, Zach Wessels 10, Goliath Oboyo 6, Bret Lukes 5, Collin Weisert 3 and Nate Schwab 2. Here are the Austin Daily Herald and Post-Bulletin stories, and the video highlights:

The Packers had a quick turnaround, as they traveled to La Crosse, Wisconsin to take part in the Midwest Players Classic. Playing their second game in 16 hours, they got off to a good start against Gale-Ettrick-Trempeleau, an undefeated Wisconsin team, but ran out of gas in the second half. The Herald story has the details.

Joe Aase had 13 points for the Packers, while Zach Wessels had 6, Goliath Oboyo 4, Nate Schwab 3 and Zach Vierkandt, Bret Lukes, Tom Aase and Collin Weisert had 2 each.
