Packers tied for Big 9 Lead

The Packers raced to an early lead Friday night and led all the way in a 69-56 win over Rochester Century Friday night at home.

Joe Aase led the Pack with 21 points, while  Zach Wessels had 20, Tom Aase 15,  Nate Schwab 6, Bret Lukes 3 and  Goliath Oboyo and Collin Weisert 2 each. See the recaps in the Austin Daily Herald and Austin Post-Bulletin.

The win, combined with an Owatonna loss to Mankato East, means the Packers are now tied with Owatonna for first place in the Big 9 Conference with three games remaining. If the Packers and Huskies win their next two conference games, the title will be decided in a winner-take-all regular season finale Mar. 2 in Austin.

Packers lap Faribault

The offense wasn’t as impressive as in their earlier 74-19 win over Faribault, but the Packer boys managed to double the Falcons’ score Tuesday night in a 58-29 road win.

Tom Aase had a double-double for the Packers with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Joe Aase had 15 points and 8 rebounds, Zach Wessels had 8 points, Bret Lukes 5, Ryan Larson 4, Nate Schwab 3 and Collin Weisert 2.

The Packers are now 15-5 on the year and 12-2 in the Big Nine, one game behind Owatonna. Their next game is at home on Friday against Rochester Century, currently fourth in the conference.

Packers stay unbeaten at home

It wasn’t pretty, but the Packers managed at 72-60 win Thursday night over Mankato West to run their home winning streak to nine straight games dating back to their home section win last year.

The Packers trailed 17-12 with 11:23 to play in the first half, but went on a 28-6 run to close the half, taking a 40-23 lead into halftime.

Zach Wessels led the scoring with 22 points, while Joe Aase added 14, Tom Aase 13, Bret Lukes 9, Goliath Oboyo 6, Zach Vierkandt and Nate Schwab 3 each and Collin Weisert 2.

The next game for the Packers is Tuesday in Faribault. They return home next Friday night to host Rochester Century.

Packers fade late against third-ranked Washburn

The Packers played Minneapolis Washburn tough for 32 minutes on Saturday, trailing the Millers 70-66 with four minutes remaining, before a late Washburn run fueled by a gambling Packers defense stretched the final margin to 86-67.

It was a seesaw affair during the first half, as the Packers lead 36-31 with 2:40 to play. But the Millers closed the half on a 10-1 run to take at 41-37 lead into the intermission.

Joe Aase led the Packers with 23 points (18 in the first half), while Zach Wessels added 18, Tom Aase and Nate Schwab 7 each, Zach Vierkandt 6, Bret Lukes 4 and Collin Weisert 2.

Packers rout Rochester Mayo

The Austin Packers notched their 13th win of the season last night as they raced to a 49-21 halftime lead on the way to a 78-47 home win over Rochester Mayo.

The win avenged a 53-5o loss Dec. 16 to the Spartans and kept the Packers home record perfect at 7-0.

Joe Aase led the Packers in scoring with 28 points, while Tom Aase added 16 (including a pair of first-half dunks) and Zach Wessels scored 10.Goliath Oboyo had 7 points, Nate Schwab and Bret Lukes 5 each, and Zach Vierkandt, Ajuda Nywesh and Curtis Oberbroeckling 2 apiece.

The seventh-ranked Packers, 13-4 on the year, face another big game today as they travel to Minneapolis to face Washburn, currently 16-2 and ranked third in the state.
