Packers Lose to Cedar Falls

12 Dec

On Saturday, the Packers traveled to Cedar Falls, Iowa to face one of the top teams in the large-school division. After a slow start that saw them down 28-14 at the end of the first quarter, the Packers clawed their way back to within 8 points, 38-30, with less than a minute to go before halftime. But Cedar Falls point guard James Harrington’s three-pointer at the end of the half was ruled to have beaten the buzzer, putting the Packers down by 11 at the half.

The Tigers pulled away in the second half, as the Packers managed just 11 points. Zach Wessels led the Packers with 16 points on the night, while Tom Aase had 10, Joe Aase 6, Goliath Oboyo 4, Collin Weisert 3 and Zach Vierkandt 2. See the recap in the Austin Daily Herald and the Post-Bulletin.

Here are the video highlights, led by Daniel Gatbel’s dance at the University of Northern Iowa game, which the boys attended Saturday afternoon:

Packers Thump New Prague in Season Opener

7 Dec

After overcoming first-game jitters that saw them trailing 21-19 at halftime, the Austin Packers outscored the New Prague Trojans 36-11 in the second half for a 55-32 win against the defending Section 1AAA champions on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

The 23-point loss was New Prague’s worst at home since Jan. 17, 2008, when the Trojans lost by 25 to Edina. For Austin coach Kris Fadness, it marked career victory #250, running his record as a head coach to 250-201.

The Austin boys had balanced attack, with nine Packers getting into the scoring column. Joe Aase, Tom Aase and Goliath Oboyo each scored 10, while Zack Vierkandt had 8, Colin Weisert 5, Zach Wessels and Bret Lukes 4 each, Nate Schwab 3 and Dan Gatbel 1. Here are the highlights:

Packers Open Season Tuesday in New Prague

3 Dec

The 2011-12 Austin Packers kick off their quest for a March trip to Williams Arena with a journey to New Prague on Tuesday, Dec. 6 to take on the defending Section 1AAA champion Trojans.

The Packers are coming off their third straight winning season, having finished tied for fourth in the Big 9 last year with a 11-7 record, and 14-12 overall.  They return three starters who are still underclassmen, with juniors Joe Aase and Tom Aase, who were all-conference selections last year, along with sophomore Zach Wessels. A strong group of seniors including Goliath Oboyo, Nathan Schwab, Zach Vierkandt, Dan Gatbel and Ryan Larson, along with juniors Tommy Olmsted and Colin Weisert and sophomore Bret Lukes round out a roster with high expectations.
