Packers Split Weekend Games

The Austin boys got a big win Friday night on the road against Big Nine rival Rochester Century, as they started quickly and never looked back. The Packers and Panthers went into the game tied for first in the conference (along with Owatonna), and the Packers came out with the victory.

Joe Aase led the Packers with 18 points, while Tom Aase had 15, Zach Wessels 10, Goliath Oboyo 6, Bret Lukes 5, Collin Weisert 3 and Nate Schwab 2. Here are the Austin Daily Herald and Post-Bulletin stories, and the video highlights:

The Packers had a quick turnaround, as they traveled to La Crosse, Wisconsin to take part in the Midwest Players Classic. Playing their second game in 16 hours, they got off to a good start against Gale-Ettrick-Trempeleau, an undefeated Wisconsin team, but ran out of gas in the second half. The Herald story has the details.

Joe Aase had 13 points for the Packers, while Zach Wessels had 6, Goliath Oboyo 4, Nate Schwab 3 and Zach Vierkandt, Bret Lukes, Tom Aase and Collin Weisert had 2 each.

Packers Thrash Faribault for 5th Straight

The Austin boys started fast and never looked back as they routed Faribault 74-19 Tuesday night in Big Nine Conference basketball action.

The Packers built leads of 13-2 and 32-7 en route to a 48-11 halftime lead, and all of the Packers saw significant playing time. Joe Aase led the Packers with 16 points, while Collin Weisert had 14; Zach Wessels 11; Tom Aase 9; Bret Lukes, Goliath Oboyo amd Zach Veirkandt 5 each, and Nate Schwab, Tommy Olmsted, Curtis Oberbroeckling and Ajuda Nywesh, 2.

First in Conference, Seventh in State

Thanks to Mayo’s double overtime loss to Owatonna Saturday and Century’s Friday night loss to Winona, the Austin Packers are now in a six-way tie for first place in the Big Nine Conference:

The next two weeks will be a key stretch, as all of the conference co-leaders will have at least two games against other co-leaders.

In the statewide polls, the Packers have climbed to a #7 ranking, as reported in Breakdown Sports:

The Packers host Faribault tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m., while Mankato East travels to Mayo, Owatonna hosts Winona, Mankato West visits Albert Lea and Century goes to John Marshall.

 

 

 

Packers win 4th Straight

The Austin Packers used strong defense and good ball movement to close the first half on a 28-9 run en route to a 55-38 win at Mankato West on Friday night.

Joe Aase led the Packers with 20 points, while Zach Wessels had 13, Tom Aase 12, Bret Lukes 4, Goliath Oboyo 3, Zach Vierkandt 2 and Nate Schwab 1. Here are the stories in the Post-Bulletin and Austin Daily Herald, as well as KEYC TV in  Mankato.

The Packers are now 6-2 and went into the game ranked #10 in the Minnesota Class AAA boys basketball rankings. In the Big 9, they’re 3-1 and in a five-way tie for second place. They return to action Tuesday night when they host Faribault.

Packers top Waseca

After Waseca hit a three-pointer to cut Austin’s lead to 7-6 with 5 minutes gone in the game, the Packers used smothering defense to ignite a 27-4 run to close the first half with a 34-10 halftime lead, and went on to a comfortable 58-33 home win Tuesday night.

Several Packers saw extended playing time, and the scoring was extremely balanced as Joe Aase led the Pack with 10 points, while Bret Lukes and Zach Wessels both had 9, Nate Schwab had 8, Tom Aase and Zach Vierkandt scored 7 apiece and Goliath Oboyo and Collin Weisert scored 4 each.

The Packers are now 5-2 on the year and 4-0 against Section 1AAA opponents. They return to action Friday night at Mankato West in a Big Nine Conference matchup.
